Holiday Happenings at Andrew Johnson National
Historic Site
GREENEVILLE, TN – December is a month full of activities at Andrew Johnson National Historic Site (NHS). Out-of-town and local visitors are encouraged to stop by the park visitor center at 101 North College Street, Greeneville, TN, throughout December to discover what is happening. Here’s a look:
Christmas Open House – December 6. Park staff are delighted to open the historic home of the 17th President of the United States to all visitors. Located at 209 South Main Street, the Andrew Johnson Homestead is a must-see for visitors, both young and old. The Homestead will be open from 5 pm to 8 pm, admission is free. Holiday decorations, historic music, a camp fire, and light refreshments will be available.
Tour of Homes – December 8. The Andrew Johnson Homestead will be an official
stop on the Andrew Johnson Woman’s Club Annual Tour of Homes. This event will offer a different opportunity to visit the Andrew Johnson Homestead. Beginning at 2 pm, park staff will open the home of the 17th President to the public and be available to answer questions about Andrew Johnson, his family and times. This event requires tickets, please contact Linda Greer Kelly, Andrew Johnson Woman’s Club, at (423) 258-5259 for more information.
The Wreaths Across America service – December 14. This symbolic service will be held on Saturday, December 14, beginning at 11:30 am. Join park staff, members of the Greene County Veteran’s Association, and others at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery as we pay tribute to and remember the men and women, who served our nation’s armed forces.
Holiday Closures – This holiday season Andrew Johnson NHS will close at noon on Tuesday, December 24, Christmas Eve, and Tuesday, December 31, New Year’s Eve, in addition to the scheduled Christmas and New Year’s Day closures. The park will reopen on December 26, and January 2, respectively.
The Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will remain open from 9 am to 5 pm on both Christmas and New Year’s Day. For families wishing to place floral arrangements on graves, please note that artificial flowers and potted arrangements may be placed on graves from November 1 through April 1. Christmas Wreaths and floral blankets are allowed from December 15 through January 15th.
