“Forty Acres and a Mule” Commemoration of Black Church Power January 12, 2017
What: “Forty Acres and a Mule” Commemoration Day honors the meeting of twenty men of God with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and General William T. Sherman on January 12, 1865 in Savannah with a film presentation and discussion. It was this meeting that produced the U.S. land redistribution policy known as “Forty Acres and a Mule.”
Who: The “Forty Acres and a Mule” Commemoration Committee is sponsoring the event.
Why: The purpose of the showing of the film and discussion with the audience is threefold: To address the crucial relationship between the black church in Savannah and the success of the meeting; to explore the event’s historical significance; and to examine issues raised by the meeting.
Who Should Attend: People who wish to promote racial reconciliation. There is no charge.
When: Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 4:00 PM.
