FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 33rd Annual West Coast Cub Fly-In Lompoc Airport (KLPC), Lompoc, CA July 7, 8, & 9, 2017 Media Release The 33rd Annual West Coast Cub Fly-In will be held July 7, 8 and 9th at Lompoc Airport located at 1801 North H Street, Lompoc. The fly-in has become one of the Central Coast’s most popular events and is well known across the nation as one of the top fly-ins for historic aircraft. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the CUB. The event is free to all spectators. Visitors have the opportunity to walk among the aircraft, observe the flying events and interact with pilots. Cameras are welcome. The Fly-in is a photographer’s paradise of historic aircraft! Free parking is limited on site. Additional parking is nearby. Dogs must be on leashes and parents must closely watch children due to the presence of taxing aircraft. T-shirts, souvenirs, food and beverages are available for purchase. Planned Activities: Friday, July 7. Registration opens at noon for arriving pilots. The traditional homemade spaghetti dinner will be served at 6pm. Soft drinks, beer and wine are available for purchase. Dinner tickets will be available at the door. Saturday, July 8. Registration opens at 10am. Hamburgers and hot dogs will available starting at 11am. The most popular events for spectators are the pilot proficiency contests which start at 1:30pm. Bring your lawn chair and grab a spot near the action and watch the pilots try to drop a 1 pound flour “bomb” into a brightly marked barrel from an altitude of 200 feet. On landing, each pilot will attempt to land on a marked line on the runway. Neither contest is as easy as they seem! Closest two bombs to the barrel is the winner and a cash prize is offered to the first pilot that is able to drop a flour bomb in the barrel. After 32 years, the prize remains unclaimed! A mass scenic flight takes place at 4pm, weather permitting, and the take off and form-up of the Cubs is definitely a “photo op” for spectators left behind on the ground. Following the action, the best tri-tip BBQ on the Central Coast cooked by our own flying BBQ’ers will begin at 5:30pm. Dinner tickets will be available at the door. The award ceremony begins at 7pm. Awards followed by a raffle for great donated gifts! Sunday, July 9. Breakfast is served at 7am and many aircraft depart in the morning for their home bases after the normal morning fog lifts. No other special events are planned. History of the Piper Cub: The most popular Cub is the Piper J-3 Cub which is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. With tandem (fore and aft) seating, it was intended for flight training but became one of the most popular and best-known light aircraft of all time. The Cub's simplicity, affordability and popularity invoke comparisons to the Ford Model T automobile. Piper manufactured 19,073 J-3 Cubs. The aircraft's standard chrome yellow paint has come to be known as “Cub Yellow” or "Lock Haven Yellow". Cubs served in wartime as artillery spotters and air ambulances but are best known as trainers for the thousands of student pilots who learned to fly between the late 1930’s thru the 1950’s! One Cub serving with the US Coast Guard actually sunk a German U-Boat during WWII! Today, they are cherished classic aircraft from aviation’s Golden Age! Event Background. This year marks the 33rd Anniversary of what started out as the brainchild of Monty Findley and Bruce Fall, two Lompoc Piper Cub owners who originally wanted a fly-in dedicated to their beloved Piper Cubs closer than the annual event that took place at the Cub factory in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The West Coast Cub Fly-In has gained in prominence and has become one of the best attended Piper Cub fly-in’s in the nation. The fly-in in Lock Haven took a break for a few years which makes our West Coast Cub Fly-In the longest running Cub fly-in in the nation (and probably the world!). On a sad note, Bruce Fall passed away on February 28 of this year so both Bruce and Monty have passed on but all of the loyal volunteers who work tirelessly each year to see that each fly-in is better than the year before will carry on in their honor .
