MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release Date: April 10, 2019 RE: Gold Star Family Monument Project, Walla Walla, WA Walla Walla, WA – The Gold Star Family Monument board announces a series of events for the community on May 1, 2019. The guest of honor will be Hershel “Woody” Williams the eldest remaining Medal of Honor recipient from the Pacific Theater, World War II. A dynamic and entertaining speaker, Mr. Williams is coming from West Virginia to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Gold Star Family Monument to be held on May 1, 2019. To date, Mr. Williams foundation, Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation hwwmohf.org , has completed forty-four monuments across the United States. Thirty-nine more monuments are currently in progress and the Fort Walla Walla monument will be the first in WA State. The day will begin with a Pancake. Sausage and Egg breakfast hosted by VFW Post #992, 102 N. Colville St., Walla Walla, WA from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Donation is $7.00 and all proceeds will benefit the Gold Star Family Monument project. The groundbreaking ceremony at Fort Walla Walla Park, on the corner of Dalles Military and Myra Roads, is free and open to the public and it starts at 11 a.m. The day concludes with the Fundraiser/Auction at Foundry Vineyards, 1111 Abadie Street, Walla Walla, WA starting at 6 p.m. “Woody” Williams is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient from the Pacific Theater and will tell of his experience on Iwo Jima. Auction items will include the shovels used at the ceremony earlier, a flag flown over the US Capital, a “wine wall” and other items.
